WALL, SD to SHERIDAN, WY
An early wake up call was not hard when we knew we’d be seeing even more landmarks along the way. With over 100 “Wall Drug” signs in our past (no joke…we counted) we made our roundabout way to Sheridan, Wyoming.
Along the way we stopped at Mount Rushmore where we were greeted with more tourists than we knew what do to with. We kept our eyes on the sky admiring the four important staples in history. The sheer scope of this sculpture is incredible.
We hopped back in the car and took a detour through Spearfish Canyon. There is nothing quite like winding through curvy roads in the rain while trying desperately to find the waterfall on the map. Trent told us he was going to build a house and move to the bottom of the Canyon, but we weren’t surprised. He had also said that at about 15 other locations thus far. We found the waterfall and realized the overlook wasn’t good enough for us. We need to climb and get closer.
Fifteen minutes later and a failed attempt to reach the waterfall we were back in the car. We took another detour and headed towards Devil’s Tower. When we got to the base of the tower there was a lot of nay-saying about paying ten bucks to get closer. Luckily, I was in the driver’s seat and made the decision for us. It was more money well spent because they actually let you climb over all the boulders. Jami and I sat back and lounged on the boulder while our husbands climbed higher and higher. We planned our escape plan in case another boulder came crashing down. Once our husbands returned we took “a mile” hike around the tower which ended up being more like 4 miles.
We rounded up the troops and made a quick stop to see “my kin” the prairie dogs. Don’t ask.
More to come on this adventure…up next…Yellowstone.
