Sheridan, WY to Grant’s Village, YNP
I know you are probably wondering when we are ever going to get to Yellowstone. We were too by this point. Day three we woke up and the boys were debating seriously about staying in Sheridan and buying land. Come to think of it they are still debating it. We managed to get both our land-loving husbands in the car and started to head for the mountains.
In order to get to YNP we had to first venture through Big Horn National Forest. After smelling our brakes for miles we made it to the first pit stop which did not disappoint. We might have also jumped a few roadside barriers to get closer to nature.
A few tumbleweeds and several hours later we spotted our first bear just a few miles before the YNP entrance. The only reason we saw this “bear” in the first place was the line of tourist’s cars pulled to the side of the road. Our car joined the other tourists as it swerved into a U-turn with shouts of, “Turn around! Did you see the bear?” That’s when we saw it. A moose. We soon learned how to spot a real bear. You need at least 50+ cars pulled to the side of the road followed by a large blockade of humans with cameras. Essentially a large sea of humanity who have no sense of traffic laws. Then you’ll find a bear.
After the moose highlight and bear disappointment we finally made it into the park. Another hour and a half later we were pulling into our campground. Within ten minutes we heard thunder and the downpour started. Luckily Jami and I married very quick tent pitchers.
Needless to say, we love camping.
