Prepping for your photography session

One of the most frequent questions we get when we book a client is what they should wear to their session. I love this question, because it’s fun for me to talk with clients about clothing inspiration, hair & makeup, and the little things they can do to make a big impact on their photos. Even clients who feel a little uncomfortable in front of a camera can get started on the right foot simply by getting some of these things lined out. So today we are sharing our tips and tricks for making the most out of your photos.

  • Clothing

Clothing can dramatically effect the look and feel of your photos. Have you ever seen a picture of yourself and thought, “I wish I was wearing something different?” or “That (insert clothing article here) does not look flattering on me.”? I know I have thought these exact things about myself. But we’ve also experienced that feeling when we wear something that really flatters our body type and makes us feel confident. That’s what I want my clients to feel when they select the clothing for their session! There’s also something to be said about the style of clothing. For instance, you might feel comfortable in a pair of jeans and tennis shoes you’ve owned for years, but if you wear those to a photography session you might not feel so great about your photos. That is one of the reasons I always encourage my clients to choose a more formal outfit choice. I know that when I get to put on a pretty dress it can completely change how I feel about myself (granted right now, I live in PJs and have spit up on my shirt most hours of the day!). So keep these things in mind when planning your outfits:

  • Go Formal- That doesn’t mean you need to wear a suit or a ballgown. But maybe you hang up the jeans for a night and try on some slacks or khakis? Or perhaps you splurge on that boutique dress because you deserve it!
  • Think Neutrals- Neutrals such as blush, tans, dusty pinks, faint blues and teals, creams, grays and off-whites will always result in more of a light and dreamy look to your images.
  • Consider Fabric- Think about how the materials flow and move. Ladies, if you’re going with a dress consider a longer dress or maxi to add movement to your photos. Plus these make your photographs look romantic and soft.
  • Don’t Match- Coordination is better than matching. Find colors that look great together or try blending a pattern in.
  • Note the Patterns- Speaking of pattern, don’t be afraid of it. Just try to avoid those small patterns that create visual effects on the eye.
  • Accessorize- Yes, if the outfit needs it, always consider a statement jewelry piece. Also think about shoes. Closed toe shoes photograph well, but stay away from tennis shoes. Heels are pretty, but consider a wedge so you don’t sink into the ground.
  • Flattering- If you can look in the mirror and feel confident then you’ve made the right choice!

  • Hair and Make-up

I know you’re spending money on the photos and the clothing, but you might also consider investing a little in hair and make-up. Brides, this is a great time to do a trial run on your wedding make-up and hair! But even if you can’t afford that or you aren’t doing an engagement session, you still might want to take some time to make sure your hair and make-up look exactly the way you want it. May I also suggest false lashes?! These can turn an already beautiful set of eyes into something dramatic! Even if you can’t get them put on by a professional, they sell them at most stores. With a little practice and YouTube tutorial watching, you can do them yourself!

  • Clean your ring

I use a Macro lens when photographing your engagement ring, so if it hasn’t been cleaned I am going to be picking up all the dust and dirt that resides in it. Make sure to get your ring cleaned so it really shines!

Hopefully this helps you out as you think through and plan your photography session!
